Sustainability Initiative

Overview:

The sustainability initiative at RSMAS is a student run group that focuses on environmental awareness and community. We are comprised of students, faculty, and staff engaging in various outreach and campus activities that help strengthen the intersection of science and sustainability. Some of the projects or task forces we have started can be found below.

Earth Week:

A subcommittee of our initiative has been growing something special for the RSMAS and greater community to celebrate the 50th Earth Day in a weekly fashion! Regardless of the recent circumstances, we have decided to NOT CANCEL our events, but move them online as FREE webinar-based talks and activities to * attend * from home. We hope you will join us in one of our many events and are just as excited as we are!

Make + Mediate Session learning how to cope with stress while repurposing an old t-shirt into something new! Led by RSMAS PhD students Sarah Purdue & Alex Norelli

Sustainability Panel hosting:

  • Patrick Rynne – Waterlust
  • Rachel Silverstein – Miami Waterkeeper
  • Reverend Houston Cypress – Love the Everglades Movement

RSMAS Community Garden:

We have brought a little green patch to our island campus! Our community garden can be found on the backside of MSC, on the southwestern side of SALT. We are growing various types of peppers, garlic, tomatoes, watermelon, basil, summer squash, sunflowers, zinnias, marigolds, and much more! Feel free to check it out in a friendly, respectable way and even take a tomato or two if you please!
